Orthopedic oncology
One of the best departments of orthopedic oncology operates in the Maimonides Multidisciplinary Medical Center. Our specialists have appropriate qualifications and considerable experience in oncopathology treatment of musculoskeletal system. Each of our doctors passed internship under the guidance of the best Israeli specialists in the field of orthopedic oncology. Also, a good bonus for our patients is the opportunity to receive an online consultation from a leading specialist from Israel at any time, because each individual clinical case is carefully monitored by them.
A whole multidisciplinary team works in The Department Of Orthopedic Oncology, because only orthopedic doctors are not enough to create comfortable conditions for the patient and provide patients with the full range of necessary medical and diagnostic procedures. We employ highly experienced orthopedic traumatologists, surgeons, radiation therapists and diagnosticians, rehabilitation specialists, oncologists, psychologists, physical therapists and other necessary specialists to ensure that our patient has the opportunity to receive continuous medical care in one facility, starting from the first visit and diagnosis, ending with surgery, recovery after it and further outpatient follow-up.
It's no secret that medicine in Israel is actively developing every day, new and highly effective methods of treatment and diagnosis are appeared. All patients of our medical center can participate in such experimental clinical studies absolutely free of charge, if they fit certain parameters for the candidates selection. For some of them, this is a real and only chance for life extension and full recovery, especially for those people in whom all known methods of treatment have proven ineffective.
Cancer treatment is an expensive process. Understanding this, we have created an opportunity to receive financial assistance that will fully or partially cover the costs of medical and diagnostic procedures. The Maimonides Clinic operates under the patronage of the “Keren Or for our Child” the Charitable Foundation, which helps patients through donations from various organizations and ordinary caring people.
Modern diagnostics in the Department Of Orthopedic Oncology
All patients with bones neoplasms, cartilage and soft tissues need high-quality and comprehensive modern diagnostics, because further treatment and its success will depend on it. At the Maimonides Medical Center, every patient has an access to all modern diagnostic procedures required by his clinical situation. Among these:
- General clinical, hormonal and biochemical blood and urine tests.
- Biopsy of bones and soft tissue tumors.
- Modern methods of medical imaging – CT, MRI, PET-CT, MSCT with and without contrast, skeleton scintigraphy to determine the existence of distant bone metastases.
- Ultrasound methods of neoplasms examination with and without color dopplerography.
- Digital radiography and radioscopy.
If any procedure is painful and/or unpleasant, we purpose general or local anesthesiato relieve the person of any unpleasant sensations. Applying of general or local anesthesia depends on patient's request and is not necessary in every case.
When the diagnostic program requires a biopsy, the obtained tissue samples must be sent to German, American, Israel pathomorphological laboratories for accurate diagnosis and control. Thanks to such "molecular checks" , we are absolutely sure of the diagnosis correctness and accurate treatment methods.
If The Department Of Orthopedic Oncology does not have a certain specialist, diagnostic and treatment equipment, the patient is referred to affiliated with Maimonides medical institutions or to the Israeli partner clinics of our medical center. And patient will receive the entire necessary range of medical services there.
The Department of Orthopedic Oncology treatment methods
The vast majority of patients in our department retain the limb affected by the pathological process and their ability to work, as well as fully recover from the disease. We achieve such a success due to the combination of high qualification and training of our specialist doctors and the applying of modern diagnostic equipment and advanced treatment methods.
Especially surgical procedures хірургічні процедуриhave become highly developed. All operations provided in the Department Of Orthopedic Oncology take place under the basic principle of affected limb preservation (organ-sparing) and minimally invasive intervention. And if amputations are necessary, the patient is directed to modern reconstructive and plastic surgeries after the main stage of treatment, or to the manufacture of highly modern external and internal prostheses with further rehabilitation..
Innovative procedures in oncological orthopedics include:
- 3D printing of bone prostheses and their installation at the site of the defect;
- vertebroplasty under the control of computer navigation with the pathological focus localization in the spine;
- osteoplasty under the control of computer navigation;
- joints endoprosthesis after radical oncological operations;
- cryoresection (Cryosurgery for Bone Tumors);
- microsurgical reconstruction of blood vessels, bones and soft tissues;
- various reconstructive and plastic operations after the primary surgical removal of the pathological focus. For example, skin transplantation at the defect area after wide excision of soft tissue sarcoma, etc.;
- radiofrequency thermal ablation for bones tumor lesions and soft tissues;
- endoprosthesis of pelvic bones, sternum, ribs, vertebrae;
- excochleation of bone cysts.
A special development has gained the direction of joints endoprosthesis after radical surgical interventions.Such reconstructive operations give patients the opportunity to restore lost functions and work capacity, to feel like a full-fledged member of society, to lead a healthy and active life in future, despite a serious illness in the past.
The Department is equipped with the most modern wards for chemotherapy, which is used in the malignant neoplasms complex treatment of the musculoskeletal system. Doctors use only modern chemotherapy scheme with high-quality drugs from the most famous manufacturers. The dose and mode of application, he number of courses are selected for each patient individually in such a way as to obtain the maximum positive effect from the treatment and at the same time prevent the development of side effects. The following drugs are most often used for chemotherapeutic treatment schemes: doxorubicin, Doxil®, Gemzar®, Docefrez®, DTIC-Dome®, Halaven®, Yondelis®, Navelbine®, Taxol, Onxal and others.
Targeted therapy is widely used in orthopedic oncology departments of modern medical centers. This is a kind of modified version of chemotherapy, when modern molecular genetic drugs are used. These drugs are "trained" to target tumor cells, block metabolic processes in them or their division. Thanks to this action, the tumor stops growing and destroys itself. At the same time, the surrounding healthy cells are not damaged, because the targeted drugs do not affect them. Examples of such modern drugs for the treatment of musculoskeletal cancer are: T-cell therapy for sarcoma, pazopanib (Votrient®), imatinib (Gleevec®), sirolimus (Rapamune®), palbociclib (Ibrance®).
Radiation therapy in the malignant diseases treatment of bones, cartilage and soft tissues is used in complex treatment.This technique based on the destruction of malignant cells under the action of ionizing radiation. Sometimes it can be used as an independent treatment method, but more often it is used in combination with surgery and chemotherapy.Radiation therapy can be remote, when the source of radiation is outside the body, or contact, when radioactive material is placed directly into the tumor tissue. For instance, brachytherapy can be such treatment method. Each of the methods has its advantages and disadvantages. The type, scheme and duration of radiation therapy is selected by a specialist – a radiation therapist.There are many modern techniques in radiation therapy that have minimal side effects, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), magnetic resonance radiation therapy (MBST), etc.
The main task of Maimonides clinic doctors is to correctly diagnose, effectively treat the patient , and to avoid amputations and disabling procedures. To do this, we are guided in our work by such principles as a multidisciplinary and fully individualized approach to each patient, applying modern diagnostic equipment, proven and effective treatment schemes, all clinical cases are supervised by Israeli doctors – best specialists in their field.
