Diagnostic methods in Pediatric Otolaryngology
Modern diagnostics, provided in the Pediatric Otolaryngology Department Maimonides Medical Center, involves not only a detailed analysis of complaints, medical history, examination data, but also the entire arsenal of modern examination methods using modern medical equipment.
An appointment with a modern ENT doctor is practically unimaginable without modern fiber optic equipment, which makes it possible to examine and, if necessary, record on a photo or video, take a biopsy for histological examination or samples for cytological analysis.
In our clinic endoscopic fiber optic equipment is adapted for children. It means that we use the thinnest diameters of conductors to make the procedure painless and as comfortable as possible for a child of any age. Using the optical fiber method, it is possible to examine the nasal passages, the back wall of the nasopharynx, and the area of the vocal cords in great detail.
Using modern fiber optic equipment, it is possible to transmit a picture off the screen and record it in photo and video. The quality of such materials is extremely high, all information can be recorded on a digital medium and used in the further process of diagnosis and control of treatment effectiveness.
Also, in doubtful cases, this information is transferred to specialists of Israeli clinics who supervise our doctors. This allows us to put the correct diagnosis quickly and qualitatively even in the most difficult situations. If during an endoscopic examination, the specialists of our clinic perform a biopsy, then the tissue samples are sent for review to the Israeli, American or German affiliated medical centers or Maimonides partner clinics for verification of the diagnosis. Thanks to such "molecular checks", we are absolutely sure of the final diagnosis correctness and the effectiveness of future treatment sheme.
n addition, modern diagnosis of ENT diseases includes highly informative medical imaging techniques. To create treatment scheme, specialists widely use obtained data of such methods as CT, MRI, PET-CT, ultrasound with color dopplerography, angiography of the head and neck vessels.
Modern functional methods of examination in otolaryngology are also available in the clinic. For example, the patient can undergo a detailed examination of vocal cords status with the help of stroboscopy. This study is provided by a phoniatrics or a speech therapist with special education and training. Also, the department has an audiology laboratory, which has everything necessary for hearing research and detection of any hearing disorders in children from birth to 18 years of age.
Peculiarities of treatment in children's otolaryngology
Our patients have access to all treatment methods in otolaryngology, both classical and innovative. The specialists of Maimonides Clinic, together with their Israeli colleagues, provide a full range of services for the surgical treatment of ENT diseases.
Bone conduction hearing aid (BCHA) surgery
is explore to treat patients with severe forms of conductive hearing loss that cannot be corrected with conventional hearing aids or in children with severe combined hearing loss.
Shunting of the tympanic membrane (tympanostomy) or its incision (tympanotomy)
are surgical interventions provided in children with chronic otitis media. This leads to the elimination of tympanic cavity pathological contents and restoration of hearing in such patients.
Cochlear implantation
is a hearing aid technique that converts sound vibrations into electrical impulses, after which they are transmitted to the auditory nerve and a certain part of the brain, where they are analyzed. This is a modern and highly effective method of hearing loss treating in children, both congenital and acquired. For Maimonides Clinic patients only the best cochlear implants from the leading manufacturers worldwide ordered.
Also, our otolaryngologist surgeons expertly perform plastic and reconstructive operations for malformations of the hard palate (“cleft palate”). Thanks to such interventions, children regain the ability to eat normally and speak correctly.
The entire range of surgical interventions on the vocal cords and trachea in Maimonides Multidisciplinary Medical Center is conducted endoscopically and through open access. For example, small patients can have a tracheostomy, also, remove it and restore the integrity of the upper respiratory tract. The necessaty to establish a tracheostomy arises in various diseases of the ENT organs in children. For example, in case of stenosis of the larynx, its cicatricial deformation after burns, etc.
In addition, all our young patients have access to reconstructive and plastic surgeries the upper respiratory tract. As a rule, these are surgeons aimed at restoring the anatomical and functional integrity of the larynx or trachea. Indications for this type of surgical intervention may be long-term tracheostomy wearing, cicatricial stenosis of the larynx or trachea, straightening of the tracheal rings in case of tracheomalacia, the consequences of upper respiratory tract injuries or burns.
Plastic surgery of the trachea or larynx takes place almost without incisions, applying of microsurgical equipment allows to operate only in the area of pathologically changed tissues.
It is important to remember that Maimonides Multidisciplinary Medical Center actively participates in clinical research of various experimental treatment methods. Therefore, all our patients have a unique chance to become participants in such studies and receive innovative therapy absolutely free of charge. For some children, this is the only chance for a long and fulfilling life.
